The Details

The DeRuyter Dam rehabilitation project in Madison and Onondaga Counties in New York included multiple aspects of dam repairs for the NYS Canal Corp and addressed existing failing spillways and leaking earthen embankment areas.

Scope of Work

  • Clearing & grubbing of the existing embankment

  • Construction of a new 1,600 LF cast-in-place structural spillway chute using decorative formliner panels

  • Installation of a perforated-HDPE drainage system throughout the earthen embankment to include monitoring wells and remote monitoring equipment

  • Import and Placement of 50,000 CY of various drainage and dam embankment materials

  • Installation of a new 22” low-level outlet system including cast-in-place valve houses and controls.

  • Rip-rap outlet and embankment armoring

  • Decommissioning of the existing low-level outlet system

  • Specialty diving work and custom fabrications

  • Improvements to dam road

The Challenge

The rehabilitation work had to be performed efficiently in order to minimize low water levels on a recreational lake shared by a large number of property owners and the public. Challenging permit conditions and existing conditions from a 100-year-old structure created the need for numerous collaborative design changes with all the project stakeholders actively solving problems through innovative solutions.

The Result

This project serves as a showpiece for the region based on the design and construction. It provides a functional level control and dam for DeRuyter Lake while keeping the historical look and feel of the orginal structure. Recreational activities abound on DeRuyter Lake and will continue to be enjoyed by all for years to come. Project was awarded the NYS APWA’s Statewide Project of the Year award for 2020 and the 2021 Bronze award from the American Concrete Institute for Excellence in Concrete Design & Installation.
